My practicum presentation is on specialized collective information sites. No doubt you have used one or more of these sites in order to gain or learn a skill you previously did not have. Some of these sites include eHow, Wikipedia, howstuffworks.com, etc. These sites are a hub full of knowledge that is continuously updated and added to. Informational sites are very helpful since they contain a wide spectrum of knowledge that one is able to obtain. What sets most of these sites apart is that they tend to be more informational consuming than users driven. I attribute this to the fact collective intelligence according to Levy is the sum of all the knowledge throughout humanity. Not everyone can know everything but with enough sources a great deal of information can be stored and shared throughout a community.
My discussion question is : You visit information sites to learn a new skill that you didn't have before. When visiting these sites, do you ever feel as though you are directly involved in the community? Why or why not? Have you ever directly participated on one of these sites?
